Some assembly engineers accused of issuing illegal permits for Ramsar sites [Listen]

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has alleged that some engineers at district assemblies are sabotaging efforts to reclaim the Sakumono and Tema Ramsar sites.

According to her, information gathered from developers suggests that certain engineers at the assemblies issued them permits to build on the protected lands.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem following a demolition exercise at the Tema Ramsar site on Wednesday, Madam Ocloo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku, expressed concerns over these alleged irregularities.

“After the exercise, some developers claimed that engineers at the assemblies granted them permits. We have asked them to provide their documents because engineers alone cannot issue such permits. If these claims are true, it would be a violation of the law, and we will take action against those responsible,” she stated.

She stressed the need for strict enforcement of environmental regulations to protect the Ramsar sites from further encroachment.

The minister added that the demolition exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) and National Security, would continue, as 90% of the land has already been encroached upon.

She also announced plans to deploy a dedicated task force to monitor and safeguard the areas, ensuring strict compliance with all legal provisions.
