Hearts of Oak go top with win over Young Apostles

-

Hearts of Oak have climbed to the top of the Ghana Premier League table after securing a 2-0 win over Young Apostles on Saturday night at the Legon Sports Stadium.

Following their unexpected exit from the FA Cup, the Phobians bounced back in style, with new signing Michael Awuah Mensah breaking the deadlock just before halftime.

The forward powered in a header from a well-delivered Hussein Mohammed corner to give his side the lead.

Hearts doubled their advantage early in the second half when Hamza Issah’s header took a deflection off Abdul Rahman Rurf and found the back of the net.

The 2-0 victory sees Hearts of Oak move to the top of the league standings with 36 points, though GoldStars, Asante Kotoko, and Nations FC are yet to play their fixtures on Sunday.

The Ghana Premier League recently resumed after a five-week suspension, following the tragic stabbing of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis “Nana Pooley” Frimpong at their away match against Nsoatreman FC.

Pooley, a devoted Kotoko fan, was laid to rest on March 6, 2025. In response to the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced stricter matchday protocols to enhance security at league games.
