The Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) has called on the government to expedite ongoing efforts to pass the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill into law following the explosion at Odumasi, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.
GhISEP has described the unfortunate incident as a stark reminder of the need to prioritize safety and environmental protection in all aspects of work and daily life in Ghana.
According to the institute, the tragedy was preventable, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation into the causes of the explosion.
In a statement, GhISEP emphasized that passing the OSH Bill would be a significant step towards fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in the country.
“We therefore call on His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, to support the passage of the Bill into law and to ensure its effective implementation through government machinery,” portions of the statement read.
GhISEP further pledged its commitment to monitoring and managing high-risk areas such as mining and construction sites to prevent similar disasters.
“We have the expertise and knowledge to provide guidance and support to industries and organizations on safety and environmental best practices. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in Ghana,” the statement added.
The OSH Bill aims to improve the working environment and conditions, maintain the working capacity of employees, prevent occupational accidents and diseases, and eliminate other workplace hazards.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday, March 5, around 7 pm, affecting 30 buildings and eight shops, claiming three lives, and leaving many injured.
The fire, which broke out in stores selling dynamites and other explosives used by local miners, triggered earth-shaking blasts that damaged buildings and left dozens injured.
The exact cause remains unknown, but authorities say the driver of the first fire tender on the scene collapsed after his vehicle was caught in the impact. Another firefighter sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.
