Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Member of Parliament responsible for the controversial “daughter of a murderer” comment to voluntarily come forward or face severe consequences.
The remark, directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Klottey Korle and daughter of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was made during a parliamentary session on February 4 amid heated debates marking the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s death.
During the session, an unidentified MP interrupted from the backbench, shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
On Tuesday, March 4, Speaker Bagbin condemned the comment as reckless and unacceptable, emphasizing that such remarks undermine the dignity of the House. He announced a formal investigation to identify the MP behind the statement and warned that failure to come forward within the given timeframe would result in decisive sanctions.
The Majority Leader also backed the Speaker’s ultimatum, urging the MP to take responsibility for their actions. He cautioned that if the individual fails to step forward, Parliament will impose the highest possible sanctions once the investigation identifies them.
The remark has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for accountability and stricter enforcement of parliamentary conduct.
