Bechem United President Kingsley Owusu Achiaw has expressed concern over the negative impact of the abrupt break in the Ghana Premier League on top-tier clubs.
His comments follow the elimination of several Premier League teams in the Round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Achiaw acknowledged that while the break was necessary, it put elite clubs at a disadvantage against lower-tier teams that remained active in their respective leagues.
“Because the league was on break, most of the players were not taking training seriously because they knew they wouldn’t play any league matches,” Achiaw explained.
“As a result, they became rusty and struggled against lower-division teams who were still actively playing in their league.”
Despite the challenges, Achiaw welcomed the league’s resumption this weekend, noting that it would allow clubs to engage in more competitive matches rather than relying on warm-up games against weaker opponents.
“We also suffered the same fate due to rustiness, but we are confident we can still fight for a good position in the league, even after being docked three points this season,” he stated.
The Ghana Premier League was suspended following the tragic stabbing of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, at Nana Kronmansah Park during a Matchday 19 fixture.
Meanwhile, Matchday 20 fixtures of the Ghana Premier League are set to take place across various venues this weekend.
