The Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League features some incredible showdowns, as the top club competition in the world kicks into high gear this coming midweek.

Tuesday 4 March is headlined by the first leg of the derby tie between Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. While Los Blancos are the undisputed kings of the Champions League, Los Rojiblancos have never won the competition… but would absolutely love to end the reign of their hated neighbours.

“It’s a big game, a big game and we’re prepared. That’s how I see it. A big game and we’re ready,” said Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

His counterpart at Real, Carlo Ancelotti, had the following to say: “It will be difficult, as always. It will be a beautiful, entertaining and equal match. The quality of the two teams is similar.”

Tuesday also features Club Brugge hosting Aston Villa, LOSC Lille heading to Borussia Dortmund and a potential thriller between PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal. The Dutch side knocked out Juventus in the Playoff round and will be hoping for another major scalp when they face up to the Gunners.

“We know our qualities. We had full confidence that we could win and go through, and that’s what happened,” said PSV midfielder Ismael Sabari.

Wednesday opens with Feyenoord hosting Inter Milan in Rotterdam – fresh from eliminating AC Milan in the Playoffs – while the late evening kick-offs feature a trio of ‘bangers’!

Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen will bring their domestic Bundesliga rivalry to the European stage with a clash at the Allianz Arena; Paris Saint-Germain will try to knock a dominant Liverpool off their stride in the ‘City of Lights’; and Benfica v Barcelona is a replay of the most incredible match from the League Phase which ended 5-4 in favour of the Catalans.

Benfica is a difficult opponent because they play very well. They caused us a lot of problems in the League Phase match,” said Barca manager Hansi Flick.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is wary of the challenge posed by PSG: “As is the case with ourselves, PSG are top of their domestic league and are enjoying a long unbeaten run. This tells us all that we need to know about the challenge that we will face but it is also a challenge that we will look forward to, knowing that we also fully deserve to be in the last 16.”
