The Association of Ghanaian Creatives, a coalition of industry professionals, is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the appointments of Kafui Danku and James Gardiner as Executive Secretary and Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), respectively.
In a petition launched on change.org, the association argues that the two appointees lack the necessary expertise and experience to lead the institution effectively.
“We, the undersigned members of the Association of Ghanaian Creatives, urge the government to appoint qualified, visionary leadership at the NFA. The institution must be led by a technocrat with deep industry knowledge, supported by a board of experienced creative professionals who can steer the sector toward revitalization and global competitiveness,” the petition states.
The group asserts that neither Kafui Danku nor James Gardiner possess the industry experience required to lead such a crucial institution.
They claim the duo’s background in low-budget productions and social media branding falls short of the strategic leadership needed to advance Ghana’s film industry.
They further compare these appointments to the tenure of former NFA leader Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, describing her as a Harvard-trained industry expert who introduced groundbreaking initiatives and secured major distribution deals, including partnerships with MTN.
As an alternative, the association has proposed six film professionals whom they believe are better suited for the roles:
- George Bosompin – National Film Institute, GAFTA
- Jim Awindor – Film and television strategist
- Akofa Edjeani Asiedu – Veteran filmmaker and policymaker
- Professor Linus Abraham – Media and communication expert
- Akosua Abdallah – Film education and policy expert
- Nicole Amarteifio – Filmmaker and industry advocate
