Revive free school uniform policy in deprived areas – Gov’t urged

-

Parents and guardians in Old Abirem and James Town, farming communities in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region, are urging the John Mahama-led government to revive and expand the free school uniform policy to underserved areas.

Their appeal comes as many pupils in these communities attend school in worn-out clothing, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.

The free school uniform policy, introduced in 2009 to reduce education costs for underprivileged pupils in public basic schools, has declined in recent years, negatively impacting enrollment levels.

Concerned parents say the lack of proper uniforms discourages school attendance, with some children either skipping school or feeling embarrassed to participate in outdoor activities due to their tattered uniforms.

The appeal was made during a donation ceremony where Rev. Sampson Adonu of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Grace Congregation, West Haven, Connecticut, USA, provided 600 school uniforms to pupils of Old Abirem Anglican, M/A Model, and James Town Anglican basic schools.

Presenting the uniforms on behalf of Rev. Adonu, Alexander Yaw Ntiamaoh emphasized the importance of education and encouraged pupils in rural areas to work hard to become future leaders of Ghana.
