Former Black Stars forward Kwesi Appiah believes Ghana has yet to find a suitable replacement for legendary striker Asamoah Gyan in the national team.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer, officially retired from football in June 2023 after an illustrious career.
“It’s a very tough task to replace someone of his calibre and quality. That type of striker and character is not produced that often,” Appiah, who played alongside Gyan during the 2015 AFCON, told Flashscore.
While acknowledging the potential of attackers like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, the former Crystal Palace striker emphasized the need for consistency.
“At this moment in time, you have a player like Kudus and potentially Semenyo, who are playing really well for their clubs. We’d hope they can eventually have that type of level and consistency for Ghana to help lead the team to glory, as Asamoah Gyan so often did.”
In recent years, the Black Stars have struggled to find a dominant attacking force, with the absence of a prolific goal-scorer evident in their performances.
Currently playing for Boreham Wood in England’s National League, Appiah believes strong leadership and team cohesion will be key to Ghana’s future success.
