La Liga‘s title race continues on Matchday 26, as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid battle for the top spot in Spanish football.

Champions Real Madrid will face a tricky clash away to Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin Stadium – though it has been almost five years since the Verdiblancos managed a league win over Los Blancos, and a middling season under manager Manuel Pellegrini has left supporters underwhelmed.

This visit of the champions is a great opportunity for Betis to galvanise themselves, and one of the players they will look to for inspiration is winger Antony, who is on loan from Manchester United.

“I think a good player doesn’t have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball. He [Antony] has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross,” said Pellegrini. “I think he’s going to contribute a lot to us.”

Barcelona will welcome Real Sociedad to the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium. Barca manager Hansi Flick has urged referees to “speak up” after complaints against the standard of officiating in La Liga.

“Sometimes it would be nice if the referees spoke up. It could be an option, but their job is very hard. If they want to change something, I would be open to it,” said the German, who is still working hard to lead Barcelona to a title in his first season in charge at the club.

Atletico Madrid face arguably the toughest clash of the three title contenders, as they welcome Athletic Bilbao to the Metropolitano Stadium. The Basque visitors are not that far off the pace of the top three and fighting to ensure that they finish in the top four and secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League – which will make them a difficult opponent to overcome.

“The only thing we are interested in is the match against Athletic Bilbao. As I always say, the important game is the [next one]. It is as important as any that have been. We will face a strong rival in all parts,” said Atleti manager Diego Simeone.

Elsewhere in La Liga this round, Valencia’s survival battle takes them to Osasuna, Villarreal will back themselves to win at home to Espanyol and continue their strong campaign, and Sevilla face a trip to the Vallecas Stadium in Madrid to tackle Rayo Vallecano.
