Jordan Ayew set to be named Black Stars captain

-

Black Stars forward Jordan Ayew is reportedly set to be named the new captain of Ghana’s senior national team.

According to a report by Joy Sports, the Leicester City striker is expected to take on the leadership role ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

The decision follows Thomas Partey’s reported refusal to retain his position as first deputy captain. As a result, Alexander Djiku has been appointed as the new first deputy.

Partey, who has served in the role since 2019, is stepping down, marking the end of his six-year leadership tenure.

Jordan Ayew previously captained the Black Stars during the final round of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger in the absence of Partey and former captain André Ayew. Initially, he had been overlooked in favor of Mohammed Kudus for the doubleheader against Sudan.

The report suggests that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced a new captaincy selection policy, prioritizing longevity within the squad.

These structural changes, set to take effect in March 2025, aim to bring stability to the team.

Head coach Otto Addo hopes the new leadership structure will help the Black Stars improve their form after struggling to secure wins in 2024.
