Professor Kofi Abotsi, Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) School of Law, has emphasized that the constitution mandates presidents to present the actual state of the nation rather than making projections.
He noted that, over the years, presidents have used the platform to outline their future plans instead of addressing the country’s present condition as required by law.
“The constitution expects that the State of the Nation Address should reflect the actual state of the nation, not a projection,” he said.
He added, “Very often, we have seen presidents use the platform to project what they intend to do in the future rather than focus on the current situation.”
Professor Abotsi made these remarks on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, February 27, ahead of President John Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address.
The president, who assumed office in January, is expected to present an assessment of the country’s current state before Parliament.
Many citizens are hopeful that he will address the realities of the nation he inherited and outline plans for initiatives that will benefit the masses.
