Kintampo residents call for urgent action on rising road accidents

-

Residents of Kintampo in the Bono East Region are urging the government to take immediate steps to address the increasing number of road accidents in the municipality.

Their concerns follow a recent accident in which a bus veered off the road and crashed into a ditch, adding to the growing list of fatal crashes in the area.

According to the residents, Kintampo’s strategic location as the geographical center of Ghana should have attracted significant infrastructural development, including improved road networks. However, they lament the lack of basic infrastructure such as dual or triple carriageways, which they believe could help reduce accidents.

Many recounted how vehicles, especially long-distance buses and cargo trucks, frequently run off the road due to narrow roads, poor visibility, and the absence of barriers. They claim such accidents occur almost every two months, often resulting in loss of lives and severe injuries.

They also pointed out that most accidents happen at night due to poor lighting and sharp curves along the stretch.

The residents are, therefore, calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority to urgently expand the roads in Kintampo, introduce dual or triple lanes, and install road safety measures such as streetlights, road signs, and guardrails.

They believe that proactive measures will not only reduce accidents but also enhance transportation safety for travelers and residents.
