The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Health Directorate has reported a concerning rise in suicide attempts, recording 115 cases in 2024 alone.
This revelation was made during the directorate’s annual performance review meeting with stakeholders in Dunkwa-on-Offin.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News‘ Mohammed Radiu Dinn Rasko, the Municipal Health Director, Dr. Daniel Acorlor, attributed the alarming trend to economic hardship and relationship issues.
According to him, the rising cost of living is a major trigger since many individuals struggle to afford basic necessities such as electricity, rent, food, and utilities, which negatively impacts their mental well-being.
“When individuals are not mentally fit due to the inability to afford basic necessities, it takes a toll on their mental health,” Dr. Acorlor explained.
Beyond financial struggles, he also pointed out that relationship and marital issues play a significant role in suicidal tendencies.
“When individuals are not in good relationships with their partners, it can lead to mental health issues and suicidal tendencies,” he added.
Dr. Acorlor urged individuals facing mental health challenges to open up to trusted friends, family members, or professionals instead of suffering in silence.
“When you’re going through a tough time, don’t suffer in silence,” he advised. “Talk to someone you trust, someone who is dear to your heart.”
He also encouraged residents to seek professional help at mental health clinics, where trained nurses are available to provide support and assistance.
“Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. We are here to support you,” he emphasized.
The increasing suicide attempt cases have raised concerns among health authorities and stakeholders, with calls for urgent interventions, including improved mental health education, support services, and community outreach programs.
