The Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Philemon Agyapong, has assured that no nurse has been affected by the Chief of Staff’s directive annulling all public sector appointments made after December 7, 2024.
According to him, the directive initially caused unrest among nurses, but the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandah, has since clarified the issue, bringing calm to the situation.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, February 24, 2025, Agyapong stated, “No nurse has gone home as we speak.”
He explained that following the directive, the GRNMA engaged with the Health Minister, who assured them that nurses who underwent due process and obtained financial clearance would not be affected.
His remarks come after the GRNMA urged the government to exclude newly recruited nurses from the directive. They warned of industrial actions if their members were affected.
GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, also emphasized that newly recruited nurses and midwives must remain at post, as they form a critical part of Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
Commenting further, Agyapong revealed that financial clearance had already been granted in June 2024 for 15,200 nurses, who were approved for posting in the health sector.
“What I’m aware of is that the former administration gave financial clearance to 15,200 nurses, and we are expecting 15,200 nurses to be posted within that period — spanning from August 2024 to December 31, 2024,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the posted nurses are already at work and should not be sent home.
