I shed tears whenever I see foreign content on GBC – Mikki Osei Berko

-

Actor Mikki Osei Berko, popularly known as Dada Boat, has expressed his disappointment over the airing of foreign content on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) channels, stating that it goes against the national media station’s duty to promote local content.

In an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes show with Roselyn Felli on Friday, February 21, 2025, Dada Boat emphasized that GBC, as the country’s national television station, should prioritize content that reflects the culture and stories of Ghana.

“It makes me shed tears every time I see GBC showing foreign content. For what?” he questioned, highlighting the fact that many Ghanaian TV stations, including the national one, now feature about 80% foreign content.

He compared Ghana’s situation to that of other countries, like Nigeria, where television stations do not rely heavily on foreign programs.

Dada Boat believes the shift towards foreign content is motivated by money and entertainment value, but he stressed the importance of educating the public about Ghana’s culture and promoting local stories.

He further pointed out that the dominance of foreign content is one of the major barriers hindering the growth of Ghana’s movie industry.

To remedy this, he urged the government to intervene by implementing effective policies and training measures to ensure that Ghanaian content gets the support it deserves.
