The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has appealed to the Government for support in constructing a clinic and trauma facility to cater to the health needs of its personnel.
Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius Kuunuor made the appeal during the maiden visit of Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, to the GNFS headquarters, where he interacted with personnel and shared his vision for the Service.
He emphasized the need for adequate fire insurance cover for personnel, noting that many responders contract illnesses due to toxic inhalation and hazardous materials encountered in firefighting.
“With the advent of technology and the resultant hazardous materials, which are usually encountered in firefighting and other operational activities, firemen and women are required to undergo regular and timely detoxification. However, this has become impossible due to the lack of a clinic and trauma facilities,” he stated.
CFO Kuunuor revealed that the Service is working towards establishing a fire clinic in each region and constructing a trauma health facility and hospital in Tema and the Upper West Region.
He urged the Minister to assist in achieving this goal, while also highlighting other challenges, including inadequate fire stations, staff shortages, aging equipment, and limited appliances.
He commended the impact of the Annual Fire Safety Week celebrations and various fire prevention campaigns in reducing fire outbreaks in the country but stressed the need for additional support in providing residential accommodation for personnel responding to prolonged emergencies.
Minister Muntaka commended the firefighters for their sacrifices and assured them of Government support.
“The second coming of President Mahama is about leaving a legacy, and as such, retooling will be paramount to bring the Service to the desired level,” he said.
He added that the Government intends to equip the GNFS with the necessary technology to enhance its operations and pledged his support in ensuring personnel receive proper insurance and injury cover.
As a gesture of appreciation, CFO Kuunuor presented a fire extinguisher to the Minister and draped him in a Fire Service Kente sash.
