Court convicts disputed Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi of contempt

-

A Koforidua High Court has convicted the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Ernest Yaw Kumi, for contempt of court.

Following his absence in court, the court has issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The conviction comes after he disobeyed an interim injunction issued on January 7, which barred him from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia due to an ongoing legal contest over his election.

Despite the injunction, Mr. Kumi presented himself in Parliament and was sworn in on January 6, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe held that the MP, throughout the hearing of the contempt case, failed to appear in person.

He also rejected a letter from the Minority side of Parliament, which claimed that the MP was engaged in parliamentary duties, hence his continued absence from court.

The judge insisted that accepting the letter would contradict his own ruling and, therefore, dismissed the excuse.
