MTN Ghana’s ‘Save a Life’ campaign: Igniting hope through blood donation in Kpando

-

In the spirit of compassion and community service, MTN Ghana brought its annual Season of Love, Save a Life campaign to Kpando Senior High School in the Volta Region.

This impactful initiative, running for over a decade, underscores MTN Ghana’s commitment to saving lives through voluntary blood donation.

The 2025 edition of the campaign, organized in collaboration with the Ho Teaching Hospital Blood Programs Department, attracted students, staff, and the wider community.

The event, which began just before noon, marked an important step toward bridging Ghana’s persistent gap in blood supply. Miss Jessica Agorsor, a student of Kpando SHS, proudly became the first donor of the day.

A Lifeline for Communities: MTN’s Commitment to Healthcare

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mawuli Katahena, MTN Team Lead for the Volta and Oti regions, reaffirmed the company’s resolve to contribute to life-saving efforts. He highlighted that the Save a Life campaign, which began in 2011, was born out of the urgent call by the National Blood Service to address chronic blood shortages. “Blood is irreplaceable, and as a company that values lives, we have committed to making a real difference,” he stated.

The MTN Ghana Foundation has collected over 29,000 units of blood since the campaign’s inception, with last year’s exercise alone yielding over 5,000 units nationwide. The 2025 edition, spanning 42 donation centers across all 16 regions, aims to surpass these milestones with a target of 6,100 units.

A Call for Collective Action

Mr. Phanuel Mordzifa, Regional Blood Programs Organizer for Volta, lauded MTN’s sustained efforts, noting that second-cycle institutions have become the backbone of blood donation drives. However, he stressed that reliance solely on students is unsustainable. “MTN’s involvement is a beacon of hope, and I urge other organizations to follow their example to address this life-and-death challenge,” Mordzifa appealed.

Empowering Students to Save Lives

The Kpando SHS students demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm, with 111 students, both male and female, donating blood. Each donor received a health screening and a token of appreciation, including a hot meal, water, and beverages.

MTN’s decision to include more senior high schools in this year’s campaign highlights the organization’s strategy to build a culture of voluntary blood donation among the youth. “Young donors are our future lifeline,” Katahena remarked, emphasizing the importance of instilling values of empathy and civic responsibility.

A National Drive of Unity and Love

This year’s campaign forms part of a larger national initiative scheduled for 14th February, a day synonymous with love and giving. From the University for Development Studies in Wa to PRESEC, Legon, in Accra, blood donation centers will open their doors from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to welcome donors.

The campaign’s goal extends beyond collecting blood. It fosters national unity, civic responsibility, and a shared commitment to saving lives. As MTN Ghana Foundation urges, “Let’s make this Valentine’s Day truly meaningful—donate a unit of blood to save a life.”

Impact Beyond the Numbers

Beyond organizing annual blood drives, MTN Ghana Foundation has contributed significantly to the healthcare sector, constructing and furnishing a blood bank at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in 2021. Additionally, MTN’s consistent support has earned it national recognition, including the highest corporate blood donor award in 2013 and continued honors in subsequent years.

A Selfless Appeal to Ghanaians

With hopes of breaking previous records, MTN Ghana calls on the public to join the campaign. Blood donors between the ages of 17 and 60, who pass the health screening, can contribute to this life-saving cause. “This is more than a donation—it is a lifeline,” Mr. Katahena concluded.

As the nation prepares for this year’s Save a Life event, the students of Kpando SHS have already set the pace, demonstrating that through love and unity, saving lives is a mission we all share.
