Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed his concerns over the declining performance of the Black Stars, urging a revamp of the team’s technical setup.
Ghana’s senior national team has struggled in recent years, failing to progress past the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast.
The situation worsened under coach Otto Addo, as the team failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON—marking the first time in two decades that Ghana has missed out on the continental competition.
The four-time African champions endured a disappointing qualification campaign, recording three defeats and three draws, finishing at the bottom of their group with just three points.
During a visit from Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14, Otumfuo expressed his frustration over the team’s poor results. He emphasized the need for changes in the technical team to restore the squad’s competitiveness.
“The Black Stars is now a disgrace,” he said. “Get the team a good technical team to man it.
“It is not in good form currently, breaking people’s hearts always. They exited the last tournament quite earlier than expected.”
Otumfuo also stressed the importance of selecting dedicated and deserving players for the national team.
“The right players must be called in. I have told them at Kotoko that good players must be allowed to play not those with some form of affiliation.”
Despite missing out on AFCON 2025, the Black Stars will soon regroup for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Chad and Madagascar in Matchday five and six fixtures.
