Dr Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Minister of Trade, has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its recent actions against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
According to Dr Amoah, declaring Ofori-Atta a fugitive and allegedly raiding his residence could harm Ghana’s global reputation and sovereignty.
The Special Prosecutor, however, has denied any involvement in the reported raid.
“Sometimes, actions like these give people an undue opportunity to engage in anti-social behavior. As a financial economist, my concern is how this affects our country globally and within Africa.
“Globalization is key for investors, who look for democracy and security. If these issues persist, aren’t we compromising our sovereignty, particularly in terms of security?” Dr Amoah said.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, he stressed that while efforts to combat corruption are necessary, the OSP’s approach was flawed.
“Is this really the way to fight corruption? The constitution clearly outlines how these matters should be handled,” he added.
The OSP declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive on Wednesday, alleging that he caused financial losses to the state through five key contracts during his tenure.
