Number 12: High Court discharges Kwesi Nyantakyi after five-year trial

-

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, and his co-accused have been discharged by an Accra High Court, bringing an end to a five-year-long legal case.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday by Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds, followed the prosecution’s failure to present any witnesses throughout the trial. Despite listing five potential witnesses, none were called to testify.

The prosecution’s final witness further complicated matters by insisting on testifying with a mask—a request the court found unusual. With no evidence presented, the case had no grounds to proceed.

A major turning point was the Court of Appeal’s ruling on January 30, 2025, which emphasized the need for a fair trial within a reasonable timeframe.

This decision ultimately reinforced the High Court’s move to discharge the accused.

The case stemmed from an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which shook Ghana’s football landscape and led to Nyantakyi’s resignation in 2018.
