Former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kweku Eyiah, remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing the need for greater effort from the team.
After four matches, Ghana sits second in Group I with nine points, trailing leaders Comoros in the race for a spot at the global tournament set to take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year.
Following their disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Black Stars are under immense pressure to secure a World Cup berth.
However, Eyiah believes qualification is still within reach—provided the team puts in the necessary work.
“I believe the World Cup is not closed for us. We can still qualify if we win our remaining matches. A lot of effort has to be put in to ensure we secure qualification to the global showpiece,” he told Asempa FM.
“We cannot afford to miss out on the World Cup after failing to qualify for the AFCON. Whatever needs to be done to ensure we qualify, we must do it.”
Addressing recent changes within the team’s technical setup, Eyiah questioned whether adjustments to the backroom staff would have the desired impact.
“There have been some changes in the technical department. But what begs the question is, if we are seeking to make changes, is that the core of our problem? Or is the problem with the head coach? It is the coach who makes the final decision, and so changing backroom staff does not change much.”
He further urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team, warning that failure to qualify would be a major disappointment.
“In their wisdom, they know best, and so we should support them. Because failure to qualify for the World Cup will be disastrous, and Ghanaians will not forgive them (GFA). A lot of Ghanaians want to travel to the USA and Canada especially, and so we should not disappoint them.”
The Black Stars will face Chad and Madagascar in their next round of World Cup qualifiers in March.
