Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has dismissed assertions that a coup is unlikely in Ghana, revealing that he witnessed individuals plotting to destabilize the country in 2019.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Bimbilla MP, who served as Defence Minister for eight years, disclosed that the suspected coup plotters were monitored for a year.
“People don’t know what is happening. In 2019, I heard and watched people plan to make Ghana ungovernable. We set up a team to monitor and record them for a year,” he said.
Mr. Nitiwul, however, did not reveal the identities of those involved but noted that their activities included acquiring grenades and planning attacks on key installations.
While he refrained from detailing how the plot was foiled, he stressed that it was a national security matter.
He also countered the notion that coup plotters must take over a media house to succeed, citing examples from Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali.
“This is very possible; it takes just a day for the media to be seized. Do you think Burkina, Guinea, or Mali did not have many radio stations? There are so many things that can happen,” he stated.
Despite these concerns, Mr. Nitiwul expressed confidence in the loyalty of Ghana’s Armed Forces, stating that they are dedicated to the country’s stability despite their challenges.
“I am not God, but I am almost certain that we have a dedicated Armed Forces. They know the government cannot provide everything, but they have seen and heard what is happening around the world,” he added.
