The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance and related projects.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, noted that processes are underway to ensure a smooth implementation.
Mr. Yartey disclosed that barring any unforeseen circumstances, the tolls will take effect in July 2025, with a full rollout by the end of the year.
He emphasized that the Ministry aims to ensure efficiency while addressing funding challenges in road maintenance, hinting at plans to eliminate human interaction in the toll collection process.
“We will introduce a modern and technologically driven toll collection system. It will be a traffic-free process and block diversion and leakages of funds. The net will be widened to tax at least 90% of road users,” he stated.
He added that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Finance to adopt a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement for the rollout.
“It is too early to say where the tolling points will be. That will depend on proposals from the concessionaires,” he noted.
Meanwhile, ahead of the implementation, some stakeholders have suggested incorporating the payment into the renewal of roadworthy certificates.
