The ‘Derbi Madrileño’ is the headline clash in La Liga for Matchday 23, as Real Madrid welcome Atletico Madrid to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for a clash in which both bragging rights and key points in the title race will be on offer.

Real and Atletico have played to tense 1-1 draws in their last two La Liga meetings, and it’s fair to expect a similarly competitive battle this time around – especially as it’s a six-pointer for the title.
“I’m expecting a hard, tough match against a great team. It always has been that way and it won’t change [for this match]. It’s always a very tough, competitive, hard-fought and entertaining match,” said Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone, meanwhile, wants his team to lean into their mental strength to come away with a win against their great rivals: “It’s an aspect in which we’ve improved, and that’s why the club has grown as it has, and the team is held to the standards it is. Everything starts in the mind. Beyond the physical aspect, which can have an influence at times, motivation is an important weapon for everything in life.”
Barcelona also consider themselves contenders and will look to take advantage of at least one of the Madrid heavyweights dropping points. The Blaugrana will travel to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium for a clash with Sevilla – a club which has had its struggles in recent years, but appears to have a modicum of stability under Garcia Pimienta.
“We’re getting many more points at home, but there have been games where we’ve competed better away. We need to be just as demanding at home as we are away. A team that wants to achieve things has to earn points both at home and away,” said Pimienta.
The round also features Valencia continuing to battle for their lives in La Liga when they host Leganes; Athletic Bilbao will back themselves to win at home to Girona; Villarreal and Las Palmas will have their ‘yellow kit’ derby; and Real Sociedad will continue their chase for a place in Europe when they welcome Espanyol.
