President John Mahama says his administration has taken urgent steps to revitalise Ghana’s oil and gas industry, which he claims has been in decline over the past eight years.
Speaking during a ‘Thank You’ visit to the Western Region on Thursday, February 6, he said his government has engaged key stakeholders in the sector, assuring that the region will soon witness a revival.
“Our team has held discussions with our partners in the oil and gas industry, and you will soon witness a revival from the oil and gas industry here in the Western Region,” he stated.
President Mahama also announced plans to reinstate July 1 as a statutory public holiday, restoring its significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens Day.
He proposed that the day be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, allowing Ghanaians to reflect and express gratitude for the nation’s progress.
“We will have the opportunity as a nation soon to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as enjoined by the Holy Book that says, ‘In all things, give thanks,’” he added.
To ensure a well-organised observance, he said a committee of religious leaders would be appointed to oversee preparations.
Additionally, he confirmed that amendments to the Public Holidays Act would be presented to Parliament to restore July 1 as a statutory holiday.
“We will soon present to Parliament amendments to the Public Holidays Act in order that we can restore July 1 as a holiday.
“In the amendments of the Public Holidays Act, we shall also make provisions to fulfill our promise to the Muslim community for an extra holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr,” President Mahama said.
