Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Frederick Acheampong, has expressed optimism that the government will support the appointment of Winfried Schäfer as the Black Stars’ technical advisor and technical director for the GFA.
The GFA recently confirmed the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner with Cameroon for the crucial roles, aiming to strengthen the technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ghana will be absent from the 2025 AFCON, marking the first time in 20 years the country has missed the tournament.
Although the GFA did not consult the government before making the decision, Acheampong is hopeful that Schäfer’s appointment will be well-received.
“We are yet to meet the Sports Minister [Kofi Adams], but we know he is a strong and straightforward person,” Acheampong said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show. “Winfried Schäfer’s role is very important for the team and the GFA, so we are ready to support if the government cannot cover his salary.”
Additionally, Desmond Offei, head coach of the Black Satellites, has been promoted to the Black Stars’ technical bench as an assistant coach, replacing German Joseph Laumann. Offei will join John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who will remain in their roles under head coach Otto Addo.
Other new appointments include Kris Perquy as team psychologist and Gregory De Grauwe as video analyst.
