Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee set up by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to investigate last Thursday’s chaotic vetting incident, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has disclosed that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin directed his MPs not to participate in the ongoing probe.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday after receiving a directive from the Speaker, through the Clerk of Parliament, to suspend the hearing, Mr. Bedzrah revealed that an NPP MP scheduled to testify later in the day withdrew at the last minute.
“We were informed that when the NPP MP returned, he said his leader had asked him to excuse himself and not participate in the meeting,” Mr. Bedzrah stated.
He further noted that another Minority MP also refused to appear before the committee, citing similar instructions from the Minority Leader.
“He said his leader instructed him not to come,” Bedzrah said.
It remains unclear whether this was the official reason behind the Speaker’s abrupt directive to halt the committee’s work on its first day of proceedings.
Before the suspension, the committee had taken testimonies from seven witnesses and was in the process of hearing the eighth when the order was issued.
