Oppong Nkrumah welcomes Speaker’s decision to lift MPs’ suspension

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has welcomed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to lift the suspension of four Members of Parliament, following appeals from both the Majority and Minority Leaders.

Speaking to the media, Oppong Nkrumah noted that the Minority caucus had effectively made its case, and the reversal now clears the way for more constructive parliamentary engagement.

He emphasized that the Minority leader chose not to pursue a legal challenge but instead appealed to the Speaker’s discretion.

“In legal proceedings, a lawyer can argue based purely on the law or, alternatively, appeal to the judge’s discretion and sensibilities. Our leader adopted the latter approach,” he explained.

Oppong Nkrumah added that while the legal arguments had been outlined in an earlier memo to the Speaker, it was the focus on persuasive appeal during the parliamentary session that ultimately led to the Speaker’s decision.

“In the end, we got what we wanted,” he concluded, highlighting that this approach successfully resulted in the reinstatement of the suspended MPs.
