The Volta Region has been grappling with a severe water crisis for the past three weeks, leaving residents of Ho and surrounding areas without reliable access to potable water. In response, the newly appointed Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, assumed office today and made a priority visit to the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant to assess the situation firsthand.
During the visit, Hon. Gunu inspected the facility, which has faced significant operational challenges. Established in 1993, the plant relied on three pumps until 2016, when two additional pumps were installed. Unfortunately, all five pumps are now broken, crippling the plant’s ability to supply water to the municipality.
Speaking to Adom News after the inspection, Hon. Gunu acknowledged the severity of the issue and assured residents that immediate measures were being put in place.
He also noted that the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is making arrangements to install temporary pumps to restore water supply within the coming weeks.
The Regional Minister reiterated the NDC government’s commitment to fulfilling the water expansion project promised by former President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing that it remains a top priority.
Accompanying Hon. Gunu on the visit was Engineer Adam Muta Waki, Managing Director of the GWCL, who confirmed that temporary measures were being expedited to ease the burden on affected communities.
His entourage included Mr. Edem Kofi Kpotosu, MP for Ho Central; Mr. Augustus Awiti, Volta Regional Coordinator; traditional chiefs from the Asogli and Kpeve councils; and other government officials.
Residents of the Volta Region are hopeful that Hon. James Gunu’s leadership will bring sustainable solutions to the crisis, ensuring access to this essential resource for all.
