The management of Asante Kotoko will decide whether to continue participating in the Ghana Premier League or suspend their involvement indefinitely following a tragic incident during their Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC.
The distressing event occurred on Sunday at Nana Kronmansah Park, where a devoted Kotoko fan, Francis Yaw Frimpong—popularly known as Nana Pooley—was fatally stabbed. The tragedy followed a heated altercation involving players and officials from both teams during the game.
In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Seth Nii Darko, a communications team member of Asante Kotoko, confirmed that the club’s leadership would meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the life patron of the club, to discuss the situation and determine their next course of action regarding the league.
“Asante Kotoko management will decide whether to continue with the season or not,” he said.
“The management, led by Kwesi Appiah and Nana Apinkrah, will visit Otumfuo Osei Tutu and inform him of what happened in Nsoatreman, and after that, a decision will be made.”
“Personally, I wish the club would boycott the league and demand the suspension of the league indefinitely,” he added.
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko has strongly condemned the violent incident and assured full cooperation with authorities to assist in the investigation.
In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indefinitely suspended Nsoatreman FC’s home venue.
Additionally, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been assigned to lead the investigation into the incident.
