ECG raises alarm over rising meter tampering, warns of legal action

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of meter tampering across the country, contributing to significant technical losses for the company.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, February 3, Acting Managing Director of ECG, David Boadi Asamoah, revealed that in Dansoman alone, approximately 10% of the 70,000 installed meters had been tampered with, leading to under-recording of electricity consumption.

Mr. Asamoah stressed that anyone caught engaging in such illegal activities would face the full force of the law.

“We will conduct thorough investigations, and there are laws in this country. After our investigations, law enforcement agencies like the police will take over. Once the police complete their work, the case will proceed to court, where the law will be applied because this is stealing—it’s a criminal offense,” he stated.

He further assured that no one involved, whether a contractor, electrician, or customer, would be spared.

“I must assure you that ECG will not spare anybody—whether a contractor, an electrician, or anyone else. If you are caught, you will not be spared. From what we have seen, we will go after them, and the beneficiaries will also face consequences,” he added.

Mr. Asamoah lamented the negative impact of these illegal activities on ECG’s operations, highlighting that collusion between customers and some contract workers to manipulate meters is severely affecting the company’s financial stability and, ultimately, the country’s economic growth.

He called for stronger measures to tackle system losses and ensure accountability in the power sector.
