The title race in La Liga will continue to take centre stage, as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid battle for ascendancy through the course of Matchday 22 from Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February 2025.

Atletico will be in action early on Saturday evening when they welcome Mallorca to the Metropolitano Stadium. Los Rojiblancos are determined to unseat city rivals Real as champions, with manager Diego Simeone urging his team to remain humble in their excellent run of form.
“The players have done a great job in the past few months, there’s a collective effort… They know how to suffer and understand that there will be difficulties in every step,” said the Argentine tactician.
Real will have the chance to reply to Atletico’s result immediately when they face Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. Los Blancos still have issues in incorporating Kylian Mbappe into their line-up, though manager Carlo Ancelotti insists they have other problems to solve.
“Individual quality has prevailed over team balance,” admitted the Italian. “An important aspect going forward will be balance and collective work – defending. If you defend well, there’s more chance of winning.”
Barcelona, who enjoyed such a strong start to the season, have not been able to hit the same heights since, though a clash at home to Alaves on Sunday afternoon will present them with the opportunity to claim three points and keep up the good ‘vibes’ established by their Supercopa triumph earlier this month.
“We stick together and our aim is to learn from every game,” said manager Hansi Flick. “At big clubs, the goal is to win titles. And that’s what we’re working towards. We are very happy and proud but we need to keep showing that we are the best in every game.”
This round of La Liga action also features Leganes v Rayo Vallecano on Friday evening; Valencia fighting for their top-flight lives on Sunday when they host Celta Vigo; a potential thriller between Real Betis and Athletic Bilbao; and a Monday-night clash at the Montilivi Municipal Stadium between Girona and Las Palmas.
