The Member of Parliament for Pusiga Constituency, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, has clarified why she mostly congratulates ministerial nominees rather than asking them questions when they appear before the Appointments Committee.
Aside from her congratulatory messages, she often bids them farewell with a “bye-bye,” which typically sparks laughter during the vetting sessions.
However, the MP emphasized that her approach is always for the best.
“Thank you, Mr. Chairman, and thank you for the opportunity. As for the congratulations, I will always make sure I congratulate my people. And when I say ‘bye-bye, bye-bye,’ it is for the best,” Madam Ayamba stated after she was given the first opportunity to ask Health Minister-nominee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, a question on Friday.
Her initial comments caused laughter among some members of the Committee who were familiar with her style.
She explained that she had been in the chamber with Mr. Akandoh, the Juaboso MP, for no less than twelve years and could attest to his passion and competence.
“I have watched and observed your activities, and I know how hard you have worked, and I know how far you have come. I am not surprised that as Ranking Member for Health, you have been nominated. There’s nothing better than working and being rewarded, you deserve it,” she lauded.
She then proceeded to ask Mr. Akandoh about what he plans to do regarding nearly 20,000 Allied Health nurses and approximately 60,000 nurses who are yet to be employed.
As expected, she omitted the “bye-bye” from her final statement, but some committee members jokingly shouted “bye-bye,” causing more laughter.
In response, she quipped, “The ‘bye-bye’ is worrying you,” amidst laughter from her colleagues on the committee.
