The state has officially dropped all criminal charges against former National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and the party’s Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen.
Attorney-General Dominic Ayine made the announcement, bringing an end to legal proceedings that began in December 2019.
The two NDC officials had been on trial due to a leaked audio recording in which Ofosu Ampofo was purportedly heard plotting to incite crimes and unrest, allegedly intending to blame the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The recording allegedly detailed plans for kidnappings, arson, and verbal assaults on National Peace Council Chairman, Prof. Emmanuel Asante, and Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa.
All charges against them, including conspiracy to cause harm and conspiracy to assault a public officer, have been dropped.
Both men had pleaded not guilty, and Ofosu Ampofo had also faced additional charges of assaulting a public officer, to which he maintained his innocence. The state’s decision to discontinue the case has brought the matter to a close.
