The community of Kechiebi in the Oti Region has been left in mourning following the tragic death of 20-year-old Fatima Fatawu, who took her own life after allegations of adultery were leveled against her by her in-laws.
Fatima, a young mother known for her lively personality, was reportedly subjected to intense harassment and public humiliation by her husband’s family.
The accusations were said to have stemmed from misunderstandings and jealousy within the family.
Adom News learned that Fatima, married to a man identified as Fatawu, was accused of infidelity due to claims about her husband’s inability to satisfy her.
Tensions escalated when a sister-in-law allegedly caught Fatima leaving another man’s room early Tuesday morning and publicly berated her.
Overwhelmed by the disgrace and unable to bear the shame, Fatima walked to a nearby forest and hanged herself with a nylon rope.
Her body has since been transported to Togo for burial after undergoing a police autopsy and examination.
The incident has left the community reeling, sparking discussions about mental health and the impact of family conflicts.
