The Minister-designate for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has praised the government’s District Housing Project, calling it a transformative initiative to address housing challenges in rural areas.
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Mr. Adjei described the policy as “laudable” and emphasized its potential to enhance living conditions in district and rural communities across Ghana.
“Mr. Chairman, I think the district housing policy is a laudable one. It’s laudable because it brings affordable housing to people living in the districts and our rural areas,” Mr. Adjei stated in response to questions from former Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
He highlighted the policy’s role in addressing a key obstacle faced by professionals posted to rural areas—the lack of suitable accommodation.
“Mostly, when people are transferred to rural areas, they hesitate, basically because where they will stay is a problem. I believe that if we continue with the district housing policy, it will help a lot, and our Ghanaians in the various districts will benefit greatly,” he explained.
Mr. Adjei also noted the project’s potential to support economic growth by engaging local contractors and artisans in the construction process.
He also acknowledged its significance in providing retirement options for Ghanaians who wish to return to their hometowns after years of service in urban centres.
“Most people want to retire to their villages, but the issue is where they are going to stay. If we have this policy, it’s something that will help,” he remarked.
