One-week observation for Osibisa’s Teddy Osei announced

-

The one-week observation of Teddy Osei, a founding member of the legendary Ghanaian music group Osibisa, is set to take place on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at his family house in Chirapatre, Kumasi.

The ceremony, a traditional Ghanaian practice marking the one-week anniversary of a loved one’s passing, will bring together family, friends, and fans of the renowned saxophonist from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Teddy Osei, a pioneer in blending Afrobeat, rock, and jazz, was instrumental in catapulting Osibisa to global acclaim during the 1970s.

He passed away on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born in Kumasi, Osei discovered his love for music at a young age and learned to play the saxophone while attempting to form a band with college friends in Sekondi. His first group, “The Comets,” gained local success, recording with Philips West Africa and performing for radio programs.

In 1962, Osei moved to London to further his musical education, supported by a grant from the Ghanaian government.

However, political upheaval in Ghana led to the termination of his grant in 1966. Despite this setback, Osei persisted and collaborated with other talented musicians, including Sol Amarfio and his brother Mac Tontoh, to form Osibisa in 1969.

Osibisa’s innovative sound and electrifying performances captivated audiences worldwide, earning them recognition as one of Africa’s most influential bands.

The one-week observation will celebrate the life and legacy of a music icon whose work continues to inspire generations.
