A Senior Programmes Officer at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. Michael Akagbor, has expressed disappointment over recent remarks made by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
The Speaker, during a recent engagement, pledged his unwavering commitment to ensuring the bill’s passage, even at a personal cost.
The controversial anti-gay bill, which was passed by the 8th Parliament, expired after former President Akufo-Addo failed to assent to it before leaving office.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Dr. Akagbor criticized the Speaker’s stance, emphasizing that Parliament should prioritize addressing more pressing national concerns.
“Despite being the Speaker, he is entitled to his views and opinions on issues, but that doesn’t translate into law. If you followed the bill from last year, even with his promise that it would become law, it did not happen. I am very disappointed,” Dr. Akagbor stated.
“I thought this issue would have been set aside with time so we could focus on matters of utmost importance to Ghanaians—things that put food on the table,” he added.
