The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Mahama to apologise to Ghanaians so he can appoint more than the 60 ministers he promised.
The Minority has asserted that it will be difficult to run a government with the high expectations and structure of governance of the country.
Ahead of the 2024 election, President Mahama pledged to appoint only 60 ministers as part of measures to cut down government expenditure.
Following his election, Mr. Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to keep his promise and, as a result, has announced that some ministries will not have deputies.
However, speaking on the floor of Parliament during the debate on the approval of the ministers, the Effutu MP insisted that it would be hard to effectively rule the country with only 60 ministers.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin has therefore urged the President to apologize to Ghanaians and appoint more ministers to enable him to discharge his duties effectively.
“When we make mistakes, let’s admit them and apologize. Sixty ministers will not help your political cause.
“I am not the president, but if I were to advise Mr. President, I would say, Mr. President, you can apologize to Ghanaians and say, look, you underestimated the thing. I think I need to engage more ministers,” he stated.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also expressed concerns about the challenges of combining ministries, such as the Local Government and Chieftaincy Ministry, which he described as requiring intensive oversight and conflict resolution.
