Northern Region Minister-designate pledges to tackle Kayayei phenomenon

The Minister-Designate for the Northern Region, Ali Adolf John, has vowed to prioritize addressing the persistent Kayayei phenomenon, which has driven many young women from northern Ghana to urban centers in search of menial jobs as head porters.

Speaking during his vetting on Thursday, January 23, Mr. Adolf assured the Appointments Committee and the public of his commitment to finding a lasting solution to this issue, should he be approved.

He outlined plans to collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the Northern Region to tackle the root causes of the Kayayei problem.

Central to his strategy is the implementation of apprenticeship and vocational training programs to equip youth, particularly young women, with skills for sustainable livelihoods.

These initiatives would focus on tailoring, hairdressing, farming, and other income-generating ventures tailored to the needs of the local economy.

“The Kayayei menace is not a new problem, but we must make the north an attractive and viable place to discourage migration,” Mr. Adolf stated.

“We shall introduce apprenticeship programs to empower young women and ensure that every DCE plays their part in stopping this migration.”

He further noted plans to distribute materials annually to support vocational training efforts across the region.
