The Minority in Parliament, led by Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced plans to launch a fact-finding mission to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region following violent clashes between local miners and AngloGold Ashanti.
The violence, which resulted in nine deaths and numerous injuries, erupted between local miners and military personnel stationed to protect AngloGold Ashanti’s operations.
Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concern over the incident and called for swift and comprehensive action to address the underlying issues that led to the conflict.
He warned that if the government fails to conduct a credible investigation, Parliament will take matters into its own hands.
“If the government does not act – we don’t want empty actions but a comprehensive approach that people can trust. Parliament will form a committee to immediately visit Obuasi and address this issue, ensuring the business community feels secure to operate in areas affected by violence,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Minority Leader stressed the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence among local communities, mining companies, and security forces.
He emphasized Parliament’s responsibility to provide oversight and restore public confidence in the resolution process.
Afenyo-Markin reiterated the Minority’s commitment to protecting the interests of all stakeholders and ensuring that business operations in mining communities continue without fear of violence.
