Black Stars will rise again – Kofi Adams

-

Kofi Adams, the Minister-nominee for Sports and Recreation, has expressed his commitment to revitalizing the Black Stars, despite acknowledging that sports extend far beyond football.

While the national football team has faced challenging times, Adams remains determined to help them regain their former glory.

The Black Stars have struggled recently, with early exits in the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.

They also missed out on qualifying for the 2025 AFCON, marking their first absence in over 20 years. Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F, securing only three points from six matches, with three draws and three losses.

“Sports is not football. Sports is not the Black Stars. Sports go beyond the Black Stars, and football should go beyond the Black Stars, but the Black Stars are the ultimate,” Mr. Adams, who is the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency, said on GHOne TV.

“We want to see our Black Stars back again. Like what the Nigerian president [Bola Ahmed Tinubu] said when he came around here, that the Black Stars are rising again, and for me indirectly, that was what he was referencing in his statement, though he was talking about Ghana and the African continent,” he added.

Having also faced an early exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars are now focused on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which will resume in March with matches against Chad and Madagascar.

If approved by the Vetting Committee, Kofi Adams will succeed Mustafa Ussif as the Sports Minister, a position held by Ussif since 2021 under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
