The Laadi Centre for Peace Building and Security Analysis (LACPSA-GHANA), a coalition member of the Global Campaign for Peace Education, has expressed deep concern over the state of security operations in conflict areas across Ghana.
An evaluation of the current security landscape reveals inefficiencies and an urgent need for modernization.
The existing tactics and methodologies employed in peace operations are proving inadequate in addressing the complex nature of today’s conflicts.
Key challenges include personnel shortages and logistical gaps, which continue to undermine the effectiveness of security interventions.
To tackle these issues, it is critical to recognize that the problems of today cannot be solved using yesterday’s solutions. Leveraging technology is no longer optional; it is essential.
Technological Solutions for Managing Modern Conflicts
- Drones for Crime Detection and Control
Advanced drone technology offers a transformative approach to security operations. Drones can be designed in various forms, including models camouflaged as domestic animals, to covertly monitor criminal activities. For instance, drones shaped like doves could be stationed in urban areas, highways, and conflict hotspots to record and transmit real-time footage of suspicious activities. Similarly, drones disguised as lizards could be deployed in stations, homes, and other concealed locations to detect hidden weapons or criminal gatherings. - Centralized Monitoring Systems
To ensure efficiency, drone technology should be integrated into a centralized security system. A national secretariat could serve as the hub, linking regional and district-level offices to conflict zones. This real-time network would allow security agencies to capture and share images and videos of criminal activities, ensuring swift responses to threats. - Exposing Crime to Deter Criminal Networks
Transparency is a powerful tool in preventing and controlling conflicts. Criminal gangs and conflict profiteers often operate in secrecy, but exposing their activities to the public can disrupt their plans. A system that highlights and broadcasts security breaches could serve as a strong deterrent to criminal behavior. - Unique Toll-Free Codes for Reporting Suspicious Activities
A toll-free code can empower citizens to report suspicious activities easily. This system would link security agents, agencies, and the public through a unified platform, enabling swift information dissemination and action. Agents equipped with special communication devices would receive real-time updates, creating a more proactive security network. - Harnessing Social Media and Geospatial Tools
Social media platforms and tools like Google Earth can be leveraged to promote conflict prevention and management. By using these technologies to share real-time information about conflict zones, security agencies can respond quickly to emerging threats and mobilize resources effectively.
In conclusion, the number of violent conflicts keeps increasing, and lives are wasted with each occurrence. It’s no longer an option to act now or later. Ghana, by shedding light on criminal activities, can build a safer and more peaceful society.
