Media Coalition against galamsey calls for renewed fight after deadly clash at Obuasi

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is urging intensified efforts to combat illegal mining following a fatal clash at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mines.

The violent confrontation, which claimed multiple lives, underscores the escalating threat of illegal mining, including severe water pollution and vegetation destruction across Ghana.

The Coalition’s Convenor, Kenneth Ashigbey, has called for decisive government action to prevent such incidents.

“The President must issue a cease-and-desist order to demonstrate leadership. Both authorities and citizens must collaborate to implement the proposed solutions for tackling this wicked problem,” he stated.

The Coalition condemned the attack on military personnel by illegal miners, labeling it a criminal act.

“The military operates under strict protocols. No soldier will target unarmed individuals without provocation, but they have the right to defend themselves when attacked,” he explained.

“We hope for a thorough probe and justice for those responsible, irrespective of their status,” Mr. Ashigbey said.

Additionally, the Coalition advocated involving traditional leaders in addressing illegal mining and enhancing mining governance.

“Chiefs, queen mothers, and traditional priests must play a role in managing the mining process and mitigating frequent attacks on legal mining sites,” Ashigbey emphasized.

The Coalition remains committed to its fight against galamsey, urging all stakeholders to adopt a united, multidimensional approach to curb the menace.
