The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has allayed public fears regarding a bushfire captured in a viral video, which some have speculated to be dangerously close to the Akosombo Dam.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 17, the GNFS clarified that the fire, which is burning on a hilly mountainous terrain, is nowhere near the dam.
According to the GNFS, the terrain has proven challenging for firefighters to access, but said its personnel remain on high alert, monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to prevent any potential escalation.
To further ensure safety of the Dam and the surrounding communities, the GNFS stated that they have stationed personnel around the Dam to monitor the situation and respond quickly in case of any developments.
”We urge the public to remain calm and rest assured that this fire poses no threat to the Akosombo Dam whatsoever. There is no cause for alarm, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any potential spread,” part of the statement read.
As part of an effort to enhance bushfire prevention, the GNFS noted that it has launched the 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Campaign, which aims to educate the public on effective bushfire prevention strategies.
The GNFS expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
