A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, believes that President John Mahama is prepared to do serious business looking at his ministerial appointments so far.
According to Dr Asah-Asante, from various perspectives, he has sensed the president’s intention to act swiftly and efficiently without delay.
“I think that the President is ready to do business and looking at so many perspectives, you can understand that he has hit the ground running,” he remarked.
His comments came after the president released a list of ministerial nominees to key sectors, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.
The first three were the nominations for Finance, Energy and Ministry of Justice and Attorney General.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante said, “The calibre of people he wants to nominate for these positions, that is, from the point of view of those individuals, they are people with experience, both academic and professional, bringing them onto this type of business.”
He said in politics, someone doesn’t need to have a political background before being appointed to a position. He emphasized that anyone can be appointed as long as they possess the qualifications and abilities to manage public office effectively.
The political science lecturer lauded the president for his intentional efforts to achieve gender balance in his ministerial nominations for key positions across various sectors.
“In terms of constitutional and other requirements, you can see this appointment having a manifestation in that regard. Let’s look at the issue of gender. You can see gender featuring as part of the requirements from our rules and regulations regarding ministerial appointments,” he remarked.
Dr Asah-Asante expressed confidence in President Mahama’s commitment to achieving his goal of 30 per cent of political appointments for women.
“I have no doubt in my mind that he can go beyond the 30% with the way he has started” he noted.
