Kwesi Nyantakyi calls for immediate action to address Ghana football challenges

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has called for urgent action to address the pressing challenges facing football in the country.

Under the current administration, led by Kurt Okraku, Ghanaian football has struggled to replicate its past successes.

The senior national team, the Black Stars, has faced significant setbacks in recent years, including back-to-back group-stage eliminations at the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments—a first in the nation’s history.

Adding to the disappointment, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the upcoming 2025 AFCON in Morocco, further intensifying criticism from fans and stakeholders.

Reflecting on these issues, Nyantakyi expressed his concerns during an interview with Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, acknowledging the steep decline in Ghana football’s fortunes.

“I believe all is not well with our football. During my administration, we were often reaching the semifinals or finals, yet there was criticism that it wasn’t good enough,” the former CAF 1st vice president said.

“They said playing in the semifinals was a financial loss to the country.

“But now, we have failed to progress beyond the group stage in the last two editions of the AFCON and have even failed to qualify this time. It clearly shows there is something wrong with our game, and it must be fixed.

“If the problem lies with the technical team, the Football Association, or the management team, it must be addressed,” he added.

The challenges were also evident during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Black Stars exited in the group phase.
