Police restore calm after security breach attempt at Newmont mining site

The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Ntotoroso, a community in the Ahafo Region, following an attempted security breach at the Newmont mining site on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The incident involved a group of individuals who allegedly attempted to steal gold, leading to a confrontation with the police.

During the operation, three suspects were fatally shot, and four others sustained injuries.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, swiftly engaged with the Regional Police Team, local community leaders, and youth leaders overnight to stabilize the situation and prevent any retaliation or further violence.

A special investigation team from Accra has been dispatched to probe the incident, while a reinforcement team has been stationed in the area to ensure the continued peace and security of the community.

The Police have confirmed that the deceased individuals were Muslims, and arrangements are in place for their bodies to be released to their families for burial later today in accordance with due process.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as efforts to maintain law and order continue in the region.
